A Bespoke Pub Mural Project for The Queen Victoria
Urban Gypset were commissioned to create a collection of bespoke murals for The Queen Victoria pub in Newcastle, transforming a series of interior and exterior spaces with hand-painted artwork, graffiti-inspired lettering and distinctive character pieces.
The project included multiple walls throughout the venue, with each artwork designed to work within the existing architecture, interiors and atmosphere of the pub. From large-scale character artwork to detailed decorative pieces and bold hand-painted typography, the murals were created to give different areas of the venue their own visual identity while remaining part of one cohesive environment.

A Large-Scale Mural Project Delivered Around a Live Pub
This project was particularly demanding because of the scale and pace of the work. We were originally approached while working on a neighbouring project for Blind Tiger Inns, and the opportunity developed into a much larger mural commission for the Queen Victoria.
The final project involved painting 10 walls throughout the venue, requiring us to adapt designs and working methods to a variety of spaces, surfaces and architectural features.
With the pub operating as a live hospitality venue, the work also had to be carefully planned around the practical requirements of the business.
Bespoke Pub Murals Designed for The Queen Vic
The artwork was developed specifically around the character of the venue, combining portraiture, vintage-inspired imagery, graffiti and hand-painted typography with the pub’s existing interiors.
Rather than treating each wall as an isolated piece, the murals were designed to complement the surrounding furniture, finishes, signage and architectural details, creating an immersive environment that feels built into the venue.
A Bold Mural Scheme Designed for The Queen Vic
The Queen Vic called for artwork with plenty of personality — something that could complement the character of the venue while giving each area its own visual identity.
Urban Gypset created a collection of hand-painted murals and graphic artwork throughout the pub, combining portraiture, botanical elements, vintage-inspired imagery and expressive graffiti detailing.
We designed the artwork around the existing architecture. This allowed the murals to become part of the space rather than simply sit on top of it. Columns, alcoves and individual walls became part of the overall scheme, creating a layered interior that reveals something different as you move through the venue.
From the striking feature columns to the smaller atmospheric pieces, the murals helped transform the Queen Vic into a distinctive, characterful space built around its own identity.
Murals That Work With the Architecture
Rather than treating the walls as separate canvases, the artwork was planned around the architecture of The Queen Vic.
Large feature areas, pillars and smaller wall sections were brought together into one cohesive visual scheme, with each mural adding character without overwhelming the rest of the interior.
The result is a space where the artwork, architecture and interior design all work together — creating memorable focal points throughout the pub while retaining a strong, welcoming atmosphere.
Creating Depth Beyond the Paint
The murals at The Queen Vic weren’t designed to look like perfectly flat painted walls. Texture was deliberately built into the finish, giving the artwork a more aged, tactile character that works naturally with the pub’s interior.
We combined textured wall treatments, distressed surfaces and layered finishes with the artwork. The result, the space feels as though it has evolved over time
The combination of paint, texture, patina and exposed character gives the murals considerably more depth. This allows them to sit naturally within the architecture rather than feeling like modern graphics applied to a finished wall.
