As Sketch86, I use professional spray paint for murals, fine art and large-scale artistic projects where quality, colour performance and finish matter.

At Urban Gypset, we don’t believe there is one single spray paint that is right for every mural.

Different surfaces, environments and styles of artwork demand different characteristics. Fine-art murals may require exceptional line control and subtle colour transitions, while large exterior projects may prioritise coverage, durability, UV resistance and the finish of the underlying paint system.

Choosing Professional Spray Paint for Murals

Over years of working on murals and large-scale commissions, we have developed our own preferred range of professional aerosol systems.

These are the spray paints we trust and regularly choose for commercial murals, fine-art commissions and large-scale artwork.

Our product selection is based on the specific requirements of each project, rather than loyalty to a single brand. In many cases, we deliberately combine different paint systems to achieve the best possible result.

BELTON MOLOTOW

Our First Choice for Fine Detail & Artistic Control

Explore MOLOTOW

Belton Molotow is our preferred aerosol system and, for detailed artistic work, our first choice.

For us, its greatest strength is control. It allows exceptionally fine lines and precise application, making it particularly effective for murals requiring intricate detail, refined edges and a fine-art finish.

The colour selection is also one of the strongest aspects of the system. Its extensive range gives us the flexibility to create subtle tonal changes, complex colour palettes and detailed transitions across large-scale artwork. MOLOTOW’s current Premium range itself highlights a large colour selection and long-lasting mural performance.

For exterior artwork, we also value its performance where colour longevity and resistance to environmental exposure are important.

MTN 94

Coverage, Colour & Fine-Art Versatility | Professional Spray Paint for Murals

MTN 94 is one of our preferred professional spray paints for projects requiring a balance between surface coverage and fine-art control.

It has an excellent colour range and a low-pressure application that makes it highly versatile for mural painting. Manufacturer technical information describes MTN 94 as a matt, low-pressure system designed for controlled application, with a broad colour selection and strong opacity.

In our own experience, MTN 94 has a slightly more powdery character than Belton Molotow. This makes it particularly useful when building colour across larger areas, creating softer transitions and achieving efficient coverage without losing the ability to work artistically.

One of the reasons we value MTN 94 so highly is how well it can work alongside other systems.

When paired with Belton Molotow, it creates an excellent combination for large-scale fine-art murals: MTN 94 can help build coverage and colour, while Belton Molotow can be used where exceptional precision and fine detailing are required.

Urban Gypset verdict: MTN 94 offers an excellent balance between coverage and artistic control and works particularly well as part of a mixed-system approach to large-scale fine-art murals.

TAG

Ultra-Matt Coverage & Durable Base Layers

TAG is a newer Italian aerosol system that has become a valuable part of our preferred range.

It offers good control and strong performance at a competitive price point, but where TAG really stands out for us is in the character of its finish.

Compared with the other aerosol systems we regularly use, TAG produces a noticeably thicker and more powdery application with an exceptionally matt surface.

While it is not our first choice for the finest and most intricate line work, this characteristic makes it an incredibly useful product when building the foundation of a large mural.

Its ultra-matt finish can also work particularly well within layered artwork. When finer details are subsequently applied using another product with a slightly different surface sheen, the contrast can help those details visually stand forward from the underlying paint.

In our experience, TAG is also a particularly strong option when building durable base coverage on demanding exterior surfaces.

• Demanding and corrosion-prone surfaces

Urban Gypset verdict: TAG gives us a thick, exceptionally matt foundation to build upon. It is particularly effective when used as part of a layered mural system.

MONTANA GOLD

Premium Spray Paint for Fine Artwork

Montana Gold is another professional aerosol system that we rate highly for detailed artistic work.

Its colour range and level of control make it particularly well suited to refined mural painting, intricate detail and complex fine-art finishes.

In terms of application, we find Montana Gold sits closely alongside Belton Molotow. Both are capable of producing highly controlled and detailed work, although we find Montana Gold can have a slightly higher sheen—even within its matt range—than some of the other products we use.

This can be useful where a particular surface finish or visual contrast is required within a mural.

The main reason we use Montana Gold more selectively is cost rather than performance. On larger commissions, material costs can become significant, so we always consider the scale and commercial requirements of the project when selecting a paint system.

That should not be mistaken for a criticism of the product.

Montana Gold is an excellent Professional Spray Paint for Murals and, where the project calls for it, is fully capable of producing exceptional fine-art results.

Urban Gypset verdict: Montana Gold is an excellent premium aerosol system. We use it more selectively due to cost, but its performance and finish make it a product we would never discount.
