Transforming a Curved Aircraft Hangar with a Custom Digital Camouflage Design
This large-scale project involved creating a bespoke digital camouflage mural across a newly constructed aircraft hangar in rural Devon. The aim was to produce a striking finish that complemented the surrounding landscape while giving the building a distinctive identity.
Unlike a traditional flat wall, the curved corrugated structure presented a unique challenge. The design had to wrap seamlessly across the roof and both elevations while maintaining the flow and balance of the digital camouflage pattern.
Working Across Complex Surfaces
The mural was painted directly onto corrugated steel and extended across almost every visible surface of the building. Careful planning was required to ensure the pattern worked from multiple viewpoints and maintained consistency over the changing curves of the structure.
The surrounding construction site also brought additional challenges, with changing weather, uneven ground and limited access around the building requiring specialist equipment throughout the project.
A Large Scale Exterior Artwork
Working from elevated platforms and across the roof itself, the mural gradually transformed the hangar into a unique architectural feature. The digital camouflage pattern was built up using layers of muted greens, browns, creams and blacks to create a contemporary interpretation of traditional camouflage.
The finished piece allows the building to sit naturally within its countryside setting while still making a bold visual statement.

THE BRIEF
The brief for this project was to transform a newly constructed aircraft hangar in rural Devon with a bespoke camouflage mural that would give the building a distinctive identity while complementing its surroundings.
At over 30 metres long and featuring a fully curved corrugated steel exterior, the structure presented some unique challenges. Unlike a conventional flat wall, every section of the design had to flow naturally around the building’s changing contours and remain visually balanced from multiple viewpoints.
The aim was to create something bold and contemporary while allowing the building to sit comfortably within the surrounding countryside. The final concept took inspiration from digital camouflage patterns, using a palette of muted greens, browns, blacks and creams to create a modern interpretation that wrapped seamlessly across the entire structure.
Developing the Digital Camouflage Design
Once the scale and shape of the building had been assessed, attention turned to developing a custom digital camouflage pattern that would work across the entire structure. Unlike a flat wall, the design had to wrap continuously around the curved roof and elevations without losing its rhythm or balance.
The pattern was built using layers of muted greens, earthy browns, blacks and off-whites, creating a contemporary interpretation of traditional camouflage. Each block of colour was carefully positioned to ensure the composition remained effective when viewed both close up and from a distance.

Painting a Curved Aircraft Hangar
With access equipment positioned around the site, work began on transforming the huge corrugated aircraft hangar into a large-scale digital camouflage artwork. The curved structure created a unique challenge, with every square needing to align across changing angles and ridges in the steel cladding.
Using carefully planned reference points and a limited military-inspired palette, the design was built up section by section to create a seamless pixelated effect that wraps around the entire building. Despite the size of the project and the constantly changing weather conditions in rural Devon, accuracy and consistency were maintained across every surface.
The result was a bold piece of architectural artwork that completely changed the appearance of the building while allowing it to blend naturally into its surroundings.
Creating the Digital Camouflage Pattern
One of the most challenging aspects of the project was creating a digital camouflage pattern that would flow seamlessly across the curved roof and walls of the aircraft hangar. Unlike a flat surface, the changing angles and corrugated steel cladding meant every shape had to be carefully positioned to maintain the illusion and scale of the design.
Working high above the ground using access platforms, the pattern was built up gradually using layers of military-inspired greens, browns, blacks and off-whites. Each section had to align perfectly with the next, with constant adjustments made to account for the curvature of the structure.
From above, the full scale of the artwork became apparent. What appears as abstract blocks at close range transforms into a cohesive digital camouflage design when viewed from a distance, allowing the hangar to sit naturally within the surrounding Devon landscape.
Despite the complexity of the surface and the exposed location, the finished mural wraps continuously around the entire structure, turning a functional aircraft hangar into a striking piece of large-scale architectural art.
