Transforming a Plymouth restaurant into an immersive underwater dining experience — completed over three weeks of night shifts while the business remained fully open.
As a leading restaurant mural artist in Devon, Urban Gypset was commissioned to transform Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant into an immersive underwater dining experience. Working alongside the owner, we designed every aspect of the concept, from monumental hand-painted spray paint murals and a 15-metre vaulted ceiling to bespoke illuminated display tanks, architectural foliage and feature lighting—all completed during overnight installations while the restaurant remained fully operational.
Few commercial mural projects demand the level of planning, creativity and technical execution required to completely transform a live restaurant while it continues trading.

PROJECT OVERVIEW
As a leading restaurant mural artist in Devon, Urban Gypset was commissioned to transform the interior of Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant as part of an ambitious refurbishment that would completely redefine the customer experience. Rather than simply decorating the space, we created an immersive underwater environment where every wall, ceiling and architectural feature works together to transport diners beneath the ocean.
Working closely with the restaurant owner, we developed the entire creative vision before designing and hand-painting monumental murals, bespoke lighting features, four suspended illuminated display tanks and carefully integrated artificial foliage. Together, these elements transformed the restaurant into a unique dining destination that guests continue to remember long after their visit.
Over three weeks, we worked exclusively through the night while the restaurant remained fully operational during the day. As a result, customers experienced no disruption, allowing the refurbishment to progress seamlessly without interrupting normal trading.
Every mural was hand-painted freehand using professional artist spray paints. Instead of relying on printed graphics, wallpaper or vinyl, we transformed every surface into a permanent work of art that continues to define the restaurant’s identity today.

Creating More Than a Restaurant
When Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant approached Urban Gypset, the objective wasn’t simply to refurbish an existing restaurant. Instead, the owner wanted to create an immersive dining experience that guests would remember long after finishing their meal.
Working together, we developed a concept inspired by the natural beauty of the ocean. Every mural, lighting feature and architectural detail played a role in telling a single visual story, transforming the restaurant into an unforgettable underwater environment.
Rather than relying on printed graphics or off-the-shelf decorative finishes, we hand-painted every mural directly onto the building using premium artist spray paints. We also designed each feature specifically for the space, ensuring the finished interior felt completely unique and impossible to replicate.
Ultimately, the vision was simple: create a destination rather than just another place to eat. By combining bespoke restaurant murals, immersive design and handcrafted details, we delivered an environment that continues to captivate diners today.

Transforming a Live Restaurant
One of the biggest challenges of this commission wasn’t creating the artwork—it was transforming an entire restaurant while the business continued trading as normal.
Closing the restaurant simply wasn’t an option. Instead, we carefully planned every stage of the project around the restaurant’s opening hours. As the last customers left each evening, we brought in equipment, prepared the work areas and began the night’s installation. Before breakfast service the following morning, we removed every scaffold tower, tool and protective covering, leaving the restaurant clean, safe and ready to welcome guests.
We repeated this overnight schedule for three weeks, allowing the refurbishment to progress without disrupting day-to-day operations or the customer experience. As a result, the restaurant remained fully operational throughout the project while we completed a complex commercial transformation behind the scenes.
For commercial clients, maintaining business continuity is often just as important as the finished result. That’s why we combine careful planning, efficient project management and flexible working practices to deliver large-scale commercial mural projects with minimal disruption.

Painting a 15-Metre Vaulted Ceiling
The centrepiece of the project was an enormous vaulted ceiling rising almost 15 metres above the restaurant floor. While its scale provided an incredible canvas for artwork, it also presented the greatest technical challenge of the entire commission.
Because of the building’s floor construction, we couldn’t use a mobile access platform inside the restaurant. Instead, we built a scaffold tower by hand every night to reach the ceiling safely.
As work progressed, the changing angle of the vaulted ceiling created an even greater challenge. Rather than simply wheeling the tower along, we dismantled, repositioned and rebuilt it every few feet to follow the curve of the architecture. This painstaking process consumed around three hours of every overnight shift before any painting could begin.
Despite these challenges, the extra time and effort allowed us to achieve the precision needed for a mural of this scale. Every section of the ceiling was hand-painted freehand using professional artist spray paints, creating a seamless composition that appears to flow effortlessly across the architecture.
Today, visitors admire the finished artwork without realising the planning, engineering and determination required to reach the surface. Long before the first can of spray paint was picked up, every night’s work began with careful preparation, problem-solving and hours of rebuilding scaffold towers to make the impossible possible.

Every Surface Hand-Painted
Unlike many commercial interiors that rely on printed wall coverings or vinyl graphics, we hand-painted every mural throughout Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant using professional artist spray paints. This approach allowed us to create a completely bespoke environment that couldn’t be replicated with off-the-shelf products.
From the sweeping ceiling murals to the detailed marine life and decorative finishes, we painted every element directly onto the building. As a result, the walls, ceilings and architectural features became part of one continuous underwater story rather than a collection of separate decorative pieces.
Professional aerosol techniques gave us the freedom to create smooth colour transitions, atmospheric depth and artwork on a monumental scale, while still maintaining the precision needed for intricate details and realistic textures.
To enhance the underwater theme even further, we finished selected areas with hand-applied metal leaf. These subtle reflective highlights catch the restaurant’s lighting and shimmer across the artwork, echoing the movement of sunlight beneath the ocean’s surface.
The finished interior feels authentic, immersive and completely bespoke. More importantly, it demonstrates what can be achieved when original hand-painted artwork replaces printed graphics, wallpaper and mass-produced decorative finishes.

Every commission is individually designed to suit the client, the building and the audience.

Designing an Immersive Dining Experience
Urban Gypset’s role extended far beyond painting walls. From the outset, we set out to create an environment that guests would remember, where every design decision contributed to a single immersive dining experience.
Alongside the hand-painted murals, we designed and installed four bespoke suspended display tanks, complete with integrated lighting to introduce movement, depth and atmosphere throughout the restaurant. These striking architectural features became focal points that reinforced the illusion of dining beneath the ocean.
To strengthen the overall concept, we carefully integrated artificial foliage throughout the architecture, softening structural elements and adding texture to the space. Meanwhile, bespoke feature lighting highlighted key murals, enhanced the atmosphere and drew attention to the restaurant’s most dramatic design features.
We also created custom signage, including the eye-catching “HOOKED!” installation, giving customers a memorable focal point and a natural place to stop, take photographs and share their experience on social media.
Rather than treating each feature as a separate installation, we designed every element to work together. The murals, lighting, suspended tanks, foliage and bespoke details combine to create an immersive restaurant interior that feels cohesive, theatrical and completely unique to Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant.

Every Detail Was Designed to Be Discovered
The success of an immersive interior isn’t measured by its largest mural alone. Instead, it’s the collection of smaller details that guests gradually discover throughout their visit.
At Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant, every creative decision reinforced the underwater theme, creating moments of surprise wherever customers looked. Even the restaurant lighting became part of the artwork.
Rather than installing standard pendant lights, we transformed each glass globe by hand. After spray painting the surface, we carefully scratched back sections of the paint to reveal Urban Gypset’s signature tag. Once illuminated, the hidden design glows from within, turning an everyday light fitting into a bespoke artistic feature that many guests don’t notice until they’re sitting beneath it.
Instead of selecting decorative lighting from a catalogue, we used every opportunity to strengthen the restaurant’s identity and showcase the level of craftsmanship invested throughout the refurbishment. These handcrafted details create subtle talking points that encourage guests to look a little closer.
That same philosophy shaped every part of the project. From monumental hand-painted murals and illuminated suspended display tanks to architectural foliage, metal leaf detailing and bespoke finishing touches, every element contributes to a single immersive environment. After all, it’s often the smallest details that leave the biggest impression.

The Details Guests Never Notice
Some of the most rewarding features are often the least obvious.
Even the restaurant’s decorative light fittings became part of the artwork.
Each glass globe was individually spray painted before sections of the paint were carefully scratched away by hand to reveal Urban Gypset’s signature mark. Once illuminated, the hidden design glows from within, transforming a simple light fitting into a bespoke artistic feature that subtly reinforces the identity of the space.
It’s these handcrafted details that elevate a refurbishment from decoration to experience.

Behind the Scenes
Every finished mural tells two stories.
The first is the artwork that visitors see.
The second is the countless hours of planning, problem-solving and craftsmanship that make the finished transformation possible.
As a restaurant mural artist in Devon, we know that large commercial commissions rarely happen in ideal conditions. Instead, they demand adaptability, careful organisation and the ability to overcome challenges that simply don’t appear on paper.
For three weeks, Plymouth Harbour Seafood Restaurant became our overnight workshop. As diners left for the evening, we erected scaffolding, unpacked equipment and prepared each work area. Throughout the night, we hand-painted murals, installed bespoke features and integrated lighting before dismantling everything again in time for breakfast service.
Although guests enjoyed the finished environment every day, very few ever saw the planning, teamwork and craftsmanship that made the transformation possible.

Every Night Started from Scratch
Unlike many commercial projects, access equipment couldn’t simply be left in position.
Each evening began by rebuilding scaffold towers before any painting could begin. As work progressed across the fifteen-metre vaulted ceiling, the tower had to be dismantled, moved a few feet and rebuilt repeatedly to safely reach the next section.
By the end of the project, dozens of scaffold rebuilds had become part of the daily routine.
A Commitment to Craftsmanship
Projects of this scale demand far more than artistic ability.
They require planning, engineering, organisation and endurance.
From rebuilding scaffold towers throughout the night to working at height beneath a vaulted ceiling, every stage of the commission was approached with the same level of care and attention to detail.
The finished restaurant reflects thousands of creative decisions, each contributing to a space that continues to welcome diners years after the project was completed.
Guest Response
The true success of this project wasn’t measured by the finished artwork alone—it was reflected in the reaction of the people who experienced it.
Since opening, guests have consistently commented on the immersive underwater environment, with Tripadvisor reviews highlighting the marine-themed murals, painted ceilings and carefully considered nautical décor. Many describe the restaurant as “beautifully thought out”, while others praise the “most beautiful mermaid murals” and the way the artwork transforms the entire dining experience.
Rather than simply decorating the walls, every painted surface was designed to contribute to the atmosphere, creating moments of discovery throughout the restaurant. From the sweeping ceiling murals to the hand-finished lighting features and smaller decorative details, the artwork has become an integral part of what guests remember long after their meal has finished.
As one Tripadvisor reviewer wrote:
“The restaurant has a big domed roof and marine themed murals are all around.”
Another guest described the interior as:
“Beautifully thought out with decorations, paintings on the ceilings and cushions all nautical and sea life themed.”
When guests naturally mention the artwork alongside the food and service, it demonstrates that the design has become an essential part of the overall customer experience—helping to create a restaurant that people not only enjoy dining in, but remember and recommend to others.
